Cindy’s Weekly Wisdom – Decluttering for HE and SHE

Cindy’s Weekly Wisdom

Cindy

I’ve been decluttering at work recently. We transformed a short hallway that went nowhere into a storage closet, and I started working my magic on it. I told Colleen, and she said, “They must be really grateful.”

I’m not so sure.

I work for two attorneys, whom I am going to call HE and SHE. They are very different. HE doesn’t seem to think much about his surroundings, and SHE could become a decorator. SHE loves moving the furniture and paintings, putting out pretty boxes for functional items like paper clips, and SHE like a somewhat crowded decorating style. SHE also saves things, like furniture and bedding, in a storage unit so that SHE can rotate items when the whim strikes her.

When I ask HIM about getting rid of something, HE generally either tells me to get rid of it, or HE tells me that he’ll think about it later. HE has about a 3 minute tolerance for decluttering tasks.

SHE gives great consideration to all the questions: Can we use it somewhere else? Will we need it some day? Could I use it at home instead, etc. As I said, SHE likes to keep things.

Then there’s ME. I like to organize things and get rid of what’s not needed, and I take a pretty hard line on what those unneeded items are.  The woman who ordered supplies before me believed that nothing exceeded like excess. I estimate that I won’t buy another paperclip – ever. We have 13 boxes, and I don’t think a single one of them has been opened in the past 17 months. We use lots of them, but we get lots in the mail too. There’s a sea of ever-circulating paperclips among lawyers. None of us ever need buy them again! We have several dozen markers for dry erase boards. I worry that by the time we get around to using the last box, dry is what they’ll be. Same with highlighters. I could go on, but you’ve got the idea. All of these things are difficult for HE and SHE to part with because they do have an intrinsic worth, just not one that we are going to capitalize on. (Ok, the paperclips I’m keeping. They’ll probably still be good in 100 years.)

I’ve gotten rid of about 150 hanging file folders (I think we’re safe with the 150 empty ones we have left plus the 400 or so that we have in current use), a box of boxes (arrived at our office June 2010 and never even opened), a bulletin board (last used???), old legal exhibits (once the case is over, they’re junk unless it goes to appeal), and a dozen three ring binders. Yes, there’s more I’d like to get rid of but in getting rid of what I did – decluttering and organizing the new closet – we have been able to eliminate the need for 2 tall storage units and a 36″ lateral filing cabinet.

Yes, HE and SHE may be uncomfortable with my approach to consolidating office supplies sometimes, but they sure like the results.

Today’s Mini Mission

Do you have too many stationery items ~ Folders, papers, pens, clips, staplers…? If so now is the time to weed out a few. I don’t know if this mission gave Cindy ideas for today’s post or whether it was a sheer coincidence but it sure has worked to promote a consistent theme throughout the entire post today.

Today’s Declutter Item

These items were relinquished during some recent decluttering in my craft room. Stay tuned for tomorrows post of the big craft room reveal.

Folders, notebooks and loose leaf paper.

Something to be grateful for today

I sent my car in for a six month extended warranty check today. It turned out I needed new brake pads and discs on the front and I have been having a stalling problem that they fixed as well. About $700 later I will get my care back. What is there to be grateful in that you might ask. Being able to afford mechanical repairs on my car when they are needed even if they are unexpected. Thank you my darling husband for being such a good provider, we are a great team.

Space Goals

One of the areas of my home that I have been working on regularly since the very beginning of my declutter mission is my craft room. At the beginning all I knew was that I had too much stuff and I didn’t really have an ultimate goal aside from to keep working at it until I was satisfied I had gone far enough. As I have slowly gotten closer and closer to that point my goal started to become clear. I wanted what I owned to fit into the craft organising cubes that I had long ago purchased for the task. No overflow  into other rooms in the house, no stuff in other items of furniture, no stuff in other storage containers…

It occurred to me while working at this task last week that I have used this goal of decluttering in other areas of my house. Long ago I achieved the goal of fitting everything that was in my china cabinet into my kitchen cupboards. At another point it had become my goal to fit all my linen on two shelves in my linen closet. All my spare blankets had to fit into my camphor wood chest. All our books on one shelf in the book case and all my shoes in the cupboard near the from door.

In general setting an allowance of space for certain items is a great way to inspire you to declutter the things you just have too many off. It is as simple as realising you have far more of a certain category of item than you need and setting a realistic allowance of space for them to take up. Here are some suggestions…

  1. Allow one small cupboard space for cleaning supplies.
  2. Only keep enough clothes to fit in your closet. No spreading them into the closet in the guest room.
  3. One bookcase for all your books, the rest must be sold, donated or given to friends or family.
  4. Only keep your favourite DVDs that must fit into your entertainment cabinet. Not piled two deep into a full size bookcase elsewhere in the house.
  5. Cookbooks must fit on one small shelf in the kitchen.
  6. Kids indoor toys should fit in their bedrooms not taking over the family living space.
  7. Utensils could be limited to one kitchen drawer, the same for cutlery.
  8. Personal paper work might be limited to a two drawer filing cabinet or maybe even one drawer if you are clever enough to digitise and minimise the non-essentials.
  9. Shoes might be contained to what can fit on your closet floor not piled on shelves, in baskets by the door, or hiding under beds.
  10. If you have a large home you might even consider making your overall goal to fit everything you own within the closets, cupboards and storage shelves throughout you house and not have items hidden in boxes in the basement, attic or taking over the car space in the garage.

So consider a space goal in your house this week whether that be a big or small goal. It might be the inspiration you need to set a final limit on a category of items you have been slowly reducing for a long while.

Today’s Mini Mission

Do you have too many glass items ~ vases, plates, bowls, drinking glasses…? If so now is the time to weed out a few.

Today’s Declutter Item

This is way more than one item but they were all decluttered in one effort so why not group them together. Although some time back I decluttered enough items form both my kitchen and my long gone china cabinet to fit what was left into my kitchen cabinets I am not stopping there.

Something I Am Grateful For Today

Some days are just special in an ordinary kind of way. A good breakfast, a chat with a neighbour, doing more than just the weekly housework chores, leftovers for dinner, the sun shining long enough to dry the sheets…

Mini Mission Monday ~ Multiples

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week we are going to concentrate our mini missions on things we have multiples of. Particularly things we have more of than we really need. I have three sets of tongs in my kitchen but even though that sounds a lot quite often there are two in the dishwasher and one in use so that isn’t too many for me. However you may have noticed I have decluttered bowls on more than one occasion recently, now that is something I had too many of and probably still do. Do you have too many of any of the categories below? If so now is the time to weed out a few.

MondaySouvenirs ~ Travel, vacation, sport, events…

TuesdayGlass items ~ Vases, plates, bowls, drinking glasses…

WednesdayStationery items ~ Folders, papers, pens, clips, staplers…

ThursdayAccessories ~ Belts, bags, scarves, hats, hair adornments…

FridayPublications ~ Novels, magazines, cookbooks, newspapers, non-fiction books…

SaturdayGadgets ~ Kitchen gadgets, grooming gadgets, garage gadgets, electronics…

SundayDigital media ~ Cd’s, DVD’s, computer games, downloads…

Good luck and happy decluttering

6 Simple Ways to Simplify Your Life Today

A guest post by Mohamed Tahomi

Simplicity is the path to simplicity!

And that’s the beauty of simplicity.

You can simplify your life by taking small simple quick actions that make a HUGE difference.

Here are 6 simple ways to simplify your life:

1. Throw away what you’re worried about throwing away

This is a very powerful decluttering tactic. We tend to fill our spaces with too many things that we don’t actually need. And the only reason we keep them is that we are worried about what would happen if we need them in the future.

For example, are you worried about throwing away an AC adapter from an unknown item?!

2. Check for alternatives to maximize the experience

“How often we confuse the end result with the tools that get us there – especially when we’re making a purchase.” – Robert Wall of Untitled Minimalism

Before making a new purchase ask yourself, “Is there a cheaper or a free way to get the same experience or result?”

For example, if you followed Dr. Weil’s 8 Weeks to Optimum Health plan, you would know that a 10 minute walk is much better for your health than working out in a Gym.

So, save your Gym membership and replace it with a 10 minute daily walk in nature.

3. Eliminate your news media time

I know this one is hard because news are hunting you every where you go. But try as much as you can to decrease your news consumption.

Can you start by spending a week without news media? (I would love to hear your answer in the comments section below)

4. Share instead of owning

Everyone is obsessed with owning things, instead of sharing things.

Before you buy something ask yourself, “Can I borrow it?” Specially, if you’re not going to use it frequently.

Also, before you consume something ask yourself, “Can I share it?”

Share meals, apartment, free invites to places where you have membership, etc.

Think sharing instead of owning.

5. Make more heart based decisions

“Think of how amazing it would be to make decisions based on something besides money.” – Courtney Carver

Money is a big factor in our decision making process. Try once a month to do something out of pure joy and desire, and don’t make money as a deciding factor. If you really love it and want to do it, just do it.

Once a month or every quarter or whatever. Do something without much consideration of money.

6. Do work you love

This is a long term goal that you should set today.

Life is meant to be lived doing work we love, instead of work that pays the bills.

If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, start simplifying your life and making a safety net by saving one year’s worth of living expenses.

Once you have that, quit your job and pursue something you’re truly passionate about.

Live by Neil DeGrosse Tyson’s philosophy: “I’m driven by two main philosophies: Know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.”

Friday’s Favourites ~ 1Jun2012

On Fridays at 365 Less Things I share with you my favourite comments from my wonderful readers and my favourite web finds of the week. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I did.

Favourite Comments. Enjoy!

This comment shows how Lena had no problem outlining her items for this week’s mini missions on Monday. Clearly she has a good imagination and a clear knowledge of what remains in her home that is needing decluttering.

I enjoyed this comment from Jez it is almost sounds like a minimalist evolution in progress. She went from accepting free items she never got around to using to decluttering them to realising avoiding even the most harmless clutter in the first place is the smart strategy.

In this comment Ideealistin tells us how borrowing works for her.

In this comment Willow adds some tips on choosing good quality knitted garments to my “Choosing Quality Clothing” post. Thanks Willow they were very helpful to our readers.

Favourite Web Finds. Happy reading!

This post from The Minimalists tells us a lot about how homes become cluttered.

See how you can relate the ideas in this blog post from The Change Blog to your decluttering goals.

This TV advertisement always makes me laugh so I googled it to share with you.

Here is a post I stubbled upon with some good craft supply donation points for our American readers.

I found this take on the absurdity of modern day kitchen gadgets amusing although I did start to wonder if it wasn’t bordering on being a little racist. Please ignore that side of it if you think it does exist.

Today’s Mini Mission

Declutter something that comes to mind when you read this question ~ At what point did I find this attractive?

Today’s Declutter Item

I have four of these bowls but I have several other sets of bowls as well, since these take up the most room I have chosen them to be declutter. I used to find these bowls visually pleasing but now I find minimalism more appealing.

Something I Am Grateful For Today

Giving away some craft items that have lingered too long in my home. The please response from the person I offered them to only added to my joy.
