Today was a simple choice. When we first moved into our current home there was no dishwasher so I bought a dish rack to drain the dishes on after the laborious effort of washing them by hand. The sink area of this house was so badly designed that we soon decided that we really had to have a dishwasher even though it may not be the most environmentally friendly choice. So now we no longer need the dish rack, it doesn’t fit in any of the kitchen cupboards and it will only rust if left lying around unused to out it goes.

If it is any consolation, I’ve heard that modern dishwashers generally use less water, soap, and energy than washing by hand.

Hi Elizabeth,
I also believe that to be true. The instuctions for my dishwasher says not to rinse the dishes first as that is just an unnecessary waste of extra water.

I have had that same dish rack for about 5 years and It just broke on me. I had it sitting in a “repair” pile, but its now going for sure. We’ve replaced it already, and to be perfectly honest…I hated the thing!!! Good luck on your journey! I’m also decluttering and finding great peace with it!!

Hi Jaume,
I seem to have a few readers this week that are starting at the beginning of my blog and working their way though. I would like to say welcome to our little community here at 365lessthings.com and I hope you will find help and inspiration among what you read. I am pleased also that you have found your voice already and have left this comment today. I hope it won’t be your last as we learn a lot from what each person has to contributes and that often inspires post topics for me to write about. So good luck in your journey and happy decluttering.
As for that dish rack I can’t say I have missed mine for one minute since it left. Although in my case it wasn’t really about the dish rack so much as it was about the bad design of my kitchen sink area. Bad design is a small irritant until it involves disruption to everyday activity and then in becomes a big annoyance.
