Mini Mission Monday ~ Making your bedroom a restful space

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

Last week Andréia was telling me what a mess her bedroom us so I set her the challenge to declutter and organise her it. I feel it is important that a bedroom should be a tranquil and restful space that is conducive to a good night sleep. There is no reason why an adult’s bedroom who has full access to the rest of the house to store their clutter should have an untidy bedroom. And since Andréia was getting first hand experience performing this task I also gave her an extra task of coming up with this weeks bedroom clean up mini missions while she was at it. So here is what she came up with.

Monday- Pick up all the shoes and put them in their proper place. Leave none scattered around because they get in the way (as you get up at night to go to the bathroom, you might trip). (I dislocated my toe on one on my kids shoes when we stayed in a motel once so don’t underestimate the pain a little shoe can inflict. Colleen)

Tuesday- Gather all the clothes that are out of place, say the ones that are just pilling up on that chair because you wore them once and instead of putting them in the closet or wardrobe decided to leave them there to wear a next time. Except “next time” you didn’t find them, because they were not in their place. So, just put them all away, either back in their places or in the humper of dirty laundry.

Wednesday- Pick up everything that is on the floor. It might be clothes, children’s toys, or whatever has found its way into your bedroom floor and should be somewhere else. Get a basket pick it all up, and if you have the time sort through it, otherwise, leave for the next day.

Thursday- You can sort through the basket and put everything away. If you managed to sort through your basket it is time to have a look at your closet, if you have one. If you have a hanger there, with clothes you wore once, and hung there to wear again, and the weather changed (like shorts and it got cold, or a heavy coat and it has been hot), put the piece of clothing in its proper place. Empty the hanger. Pick anything that is on the floor, like some dirty clothing that you just left there and would pick after. Have a look if your clothes are in their proper place and anything that is scattered in your closet should be put in its hanger/box/shelf.

Friday - Time to look at surfaces in the bedroom. If you have a chest of drawers/dresser have a look on its top. A quick look to access if there is anything there that doesn’t belong, and put it away or declutter it. Do the same with your nightstand. If you read before sleeping leave there only the book you are currently reading before sleep. Also put everything that you don’t use at night away. Only leave what has to be there (like medication you have to take/ anything else that you need within your reach immediately when you wake up).

Saturday - If you have a dressing table it is time for it. Look at it and do a quick clearing job taking everything from it that you are either not currently using or that it doesn’t belong there. As this is a mini mission don’t go deep in drawers or boxes, just sort through the surface so you get it reasonable uncluttered. If you have containers with things that you use most get it organized, so that your dressing table looks organized.

Sunday - Make the bed. Have a look around see if anything is out of place and it needs to be put away. Pronto! Now it is time to relax in your bedroom and enjoy all that you have accomplished this week. And tonight you will have a restful place to lay your weary head.

Well done Andréia, with both missions. I bet you now feel far more relaxed when you take one last look around your room before closing your eyes to sleep.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Today’s Declutter Item

Before I started decluttering I was happy to accept any free reusable shopping bags that came my way. As a result I ended up with far more than I needed. I have already decluttered some and here are two more that I felt were excess to my needs. Once again they went off to the thrift store.

Excess Bags

Something I Am Grateful For Today

I have had the weekend away visiting relatives while the men of the household went to the Motorbike GP on Phillip Island. We are not home yet but I am sure we are having a great time. The men folk made this pledge to get to the GP this year as for one reason or another it had to be put off the three years before. When we nearly lost our son last years we felt it was time to just do it. So if for nothing else we are grateful to still have our son to take. Hopefully by today we are also grateful that Casey Stoner (Our Aussie Champ) won the race and is now crowned this years world champion. Go Casey.

Mini Mission Monday ~ Quick Look missions

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week we are going to do Quick Look mini missions. That is each day we are going to walk into a different room in the house take a quick look, spy a piece of clutter and remove it to either the bin, the recycling, the donation pile or set aside to sell. While you are at it if you spy something out of place also rehouse that item. If you can’t see anything on the surface, so to speak, look a little deeper in a cupboard or closet. This is pretty much how I declutter all the time.

Monday – The kitchen

Tuesday – The living room, lounge room or whatever you call it in your part of the world.

Wednesday – The master bedroom.

Thursday – The bathroom.

Friday – The garage.

Saturday – The dining space in your home.

Sunday – The den/office or another bedroom.

Once you have accomplished this weeks mini mission you will realise how easy decluttering can be. It doesn’t have to be a major upheaval just a quick look, swoop and achieve.

Good luck and happy decluttering

I love my Microplane graters but I only tend to use the smaller versions so I decided to sell this big chunky one on eBay. I only got $10 for it but better that than nothing.

The weather held out long enough to 1. Go for a walk 2. Get the washing dry 3. My son to enjoy the skate park for a while 4. Make the day bright and perky for a while 5. Warm the house up nicely.

Mini Mission Monday ~ Fiddly bits

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week we are going to attack those areas where fiddly bit accumulate. So many aspects of our lives involve tiny objects like pens, keys, kids toys, gadgets and the list goes on. The spaces where these things are stored need a good going over once in a while to keep them under control and that is the goal for this week’s mini missions.

Monday – Time to go through the jewellery box again and declutter any items that you no longer wear or love.

Tuesday – Small stationary items such as pens, staples, erasers, paperclips, post-it note pads etc can become perished with disuse or soiled and damaged in the scuffle. Declutter these victims of neglect today.

Wednesday – We all know that make-up has a certain shelf life and should be discarded after that time frame. Today is a good day to reassess this situation and throw out any old make-up items you now longer use or have been around too long.

Thursday – I recently went though our old games and game pieces to declutter what we aren’t likely to use again. Perhaps you need to do the same. I suggest using Snaplock bags to keep your pieces together especially jigsaw pieces because it isn’t hard for them to escape their boxes and render the whole game/puzzle useless.

Friday – If you have ignored all my previous advice and still have a dreaded junk drawer today would be a good day to sort it out again and return items to their proper homes. Perhaps there are some game pieces in there that will render one of the items from yesterdays mini mission 100% reusable again.

Saturday – Ah the utensils drawer, a place of redundant items if ever there was one. Often the home of single use gadgets that waste more time cleaning than they save using. Do yourself a favour today and free up the space in this drawer making the truly useful items easier to find.

Sunday – Anyone who has children will know that small toys, like game pieces, can be difficult to keep together. Not because there aren’t simple solutions to resolve this problem but because kids will be kids and they don’t usually care as much as adults do. Sort through the tiny toys today and declutter any broken, grown-out-of, or things with missing parts toys. I have to admit this probably is a not-so-mini mission but it needs to be done periodically nonetheless.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Today’s Declutter Item

I still love to play games but alas my family aren’t so keen anymore now that the kids are grown. I have kept some items but these ones are certainly excess to our needs and are off to the thrift shop. I was then able to move the remainder into a smaller container freeing up more space in the closet in my daughters room. Funny how we still consider it her room even though she hasn’t lived her for four years.

Games and Game Pieces

Something I Am Grateful For Today

I am grateful I haven’t gone to the football grand final with my sister-in-law and nephew. It is raining cats and dogs out there but my garden is getting well watered for which I am also grateful. Sometimes rainy days can really cramp your style but in reality we can’t live without them so there is no use complaining we should be rejoicing instead.

Mini Mission Monday ~ Leading by example

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

Usually I just make the mini missions up from something that pops into my head. Perhaps a theme or items that I decluttered the week before. I suppose today is no different but this time I am going to actually match each day with something I am decluttering. I will name the clutter category and you can search your home for an item that fits that category.

Monday – Today I would like you to declutter a souvenir from your home. It could be from a holiday, a sporting match, a concert or any other event that you felt compelled to obtain a momento of.

Tuesday – Declutter some seemingly insignificant thing that you keep overlooking because it is hidden away or it really just hasn’t occurred to you to get rid of it.

Wednesday – Declutter an item of clothing that no longer fits you are someone else in your household.

Thursday – There is usually a collection of something in every household that the collector lost interest in some time ago. Today declutter that collection.

Friday – I know we have a lot of avid book readers out there, today see if you can choose at least one book out of your collection that you know you just aren’t going to read again. Release it out there for someone else to enjoy.

Saturday – How is that linen closet coming along? See if you can find another item in there that is excess to your needs.

Sunday – Most people I know have at least one item in their homes that was left behind by someone and no matter how many times they revisit the item is forgotten. Today would be a good day to return or discard that item.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Mini Mission Monday ~ Is your clutter bothering someone else?

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week we are going to remove some clutter that might be bothering someone else in some way. If you decide to take on this weeks missions be prepared for it to be confronting at times.

Monday – Ask your partner/husband/roommate if there is something of yours in your shared living space that they wish you would declutter because they don’t like it. It is up to you whether you comply of course.

Tuesday – Remove something from your yard that a neighbour might be able to see and think looks out of place or unsightly. Ask the neighbour if you aren’t sure and are game.

Wednesday – Ask a family member if they have anything you have given them that they really don’t want but keep because it was a gift from you. Give them permission to declutter it.

Thursday – Return something that you have borrowed from someone else that you should possibly have returned some time ago.

Friday – Declutter an area where your items may have spilled over into someones else’s space. For example ~ Your clothes in your husbands side of the closet.

Saturday – Ask a family member if there is an area of clutter in your home that you might have overlooked that they think needs attention. This might possibly be an area that is OK to you but annoying for them.

Sunday – I think you have earned a rest today so take it easy and rest up for another week of decluttering to start tomorrow.

Good luck and happy decluttering

This bottle opener was one of those “I shouldn’t have bothered” ebay sales. It sold from 99c but cost the person $3 in postage. Nothing ventured nothing gained though. At least it is out of my house. It is also the answer to the What Is It puzzle from Simple Saturday.

There were lots of readers who got it right this time but the first was Marilyn who is a new reader and this was her first time commenting. Well done Marilyn and welcome to 365 Less Things. This was her guess ~ At first I thought ice scraper, but metal on glass is probably a bad idea. Extreme close-up of part of a bottle opener?

But Di was the one with the most complete answer which was this ~ I really think it’s a bottle opener with a red handle embossed with a Coca-Cola bottle…..a novelty item. Gibson also made sets of flatware with the Coke handles also. I am impressed Di that was so exact. Do you have one of these among your clutter by any chance?

Something I Am Grateful For Today

This may seem a little unusual in the way of gratitude items but it stuck me and I appreciated it. My husband, son and I went out for a coffee yesterday afternoon before doing the grocery shopping. The young girl who took our order looked me right in the eye and smiled when done. She did the same when she asked if we wanted an extra fork for our sweet. So often staff are overworked and rushed or just doing their duty but this girl made me feel special and I like it. She was not around when we left so I didn’t get a chance to thank her but I will if I see her again.

Mini Mission Monday ~ All-over fridge freezer declutter

Although it is September twelve in Australia today it is September 11 in the USA, a date that will forever remain a day of tragedy and grief. I remember that day, getting up in the morning to see the horror unfold on my television screen in Seattle. I also remember not being able to drag myself of the couch in the hope that I would see the rescuers bring people alive from the wreckage of the twin towers. Alas I hoped in vain. When I finally did leave the house I remember feeling the urge to wrap my arms around every American I saw and tell them how sorry I was for what had just happened to their country.

I am thinking of you again today my American friends and my arms still want to hold you  and make your pain lessen. I hope that time will heal your grief . God bless America.

Mini Mission Monday

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

Something Cindy said in a comment last week has triggered the topic of this week’s mini missions. Even though we have talked about and worked on the Fridge and freezer recently they are just one of those areas that need constant upkeep. And sometimes we only focus on the inside. This week we are going to take care of every side. So lets get started.

Monday – If you keep stuff on top of your Fridge/freezer clean it off and leave it empty for a while and see how you like it.

Tuesday – Not too many people I know have an empty fridge/freezer front. There are usually photos and kids drawings, invitations and a notice board. Clear off everything that isn’t essential and try living with a clear fridge for a while.

Wednesday – Perhaps what is on the front spills over to the sides of the fridge. Time to clear that off as well.

Thursday – The inside of the fridge always is in need of a little decluttering no matter how soon ago you did it last. Have a dig around and see if there is any out of date items or just items that you keep thinking you will use up one day but never do.

Friday – Today is the day to declutter the inside of the freezer. Maybe it would be a good idea to plan tonights meal around using up bits and pieces in there.

Saturday – Since everything is clean on the inside and out why not move the fridge out of it’s position today and clean underneath it. Perhaps if it is an old fridge it might be an idea to give the element on the back a bit of a vacuum.

Sunday - Sundays are a good day for leftovers. Whip up lunch today using up some more bits and pieces out of the fridge.

Good luck and happy decluttering

This cheese board is another one of those items being decluttered due to poor design. It only has three legs and tips over when being used. Any flat plate with no legs will do the job more efficiently. I really dislike poor design, it is almost as though manufacturers do it deliberately to force people to buy more product.

Cheese Board

Something I Am Grateful For Today

A pleasant weekend. There was nothing extraordinary about it, it was just well balanced. A couple of outings, progress on my sewing project, pleasant weather, relaxation time, a walk with my hubby, a chat with my parents and a nice Sunday roast. The simple things in life are often the best.

Mini Mission Monday ~ A little random decluttering

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

For this weeks mini mission I thought I would just pick some random areas around the house that you might not of decluttered anything from for a while. If you don’t have some of these categories to declutter from substitute them with ones of your own. Perhaps someone will come up with a crazy declutter item to share with us and give us all a laugh. Come on use your imaginations.

Monday – Something off the wall. Perhaps a piece of artwork that you really don’t like but it stays there out of habit.

Tuesday – Something in the garden shed. We all know this area can get quite neglected before it gets any real attention. How about just having a quick look and seeing what you can find in there to declutter.

Wednesday – Some paperwork you know you should have taken care of by now. Old manuals that you no longer have the item to which they belong, receipts that are way past return dates, tax papers from years ago. I am sure you can find something in this category to declutter.

Thursday – Something pet related. I have no pets but I am sure I am in the minority. Or perhaps you had one but don’t anymore but still have the equipment tucked into the back of a cupboard or shed somewhere. Now is the time to find what you don’t use and either through it away if it is beyond repair or perhaps donate it to the animal shelter if it isn’t.

Friday – Old keys. Now this may not be a problem if you haven’t moved house for a while but for those of us who move around a bit it is an ongoing issue. Get any old keys together that you aren’t sure are still current and check them in every lock in the house before throwing them away. Be careful that you check every lock.

Saturday – An old souvenir. Anyone who had ever been out of their front door has usually collected the odd souvenir during their travels. I am sure you have at least one among your collection that really doesn’t mean much to you.

Sunday – A beauty product that you just know is going to keep getting pushed to the back behind your favourites. Either use it up like Cindy suggested last week or give or throw it away. These things do go out of date you know ~ link here for more details.

Good luck and happy decluttering

You will know I am done with decluttering when we run out of baseball souvenirs. I don’t think that will be any time soon.

We are having dinner quests tonight, friends that we seem to see all too infrequently these days. I am glad they have a break in the schedule to spend some time with us. To keep things simple I am cooking a roast dinner. Roast dinners are so easy to prepare and that will give me optimal time with my guests. I am grateful to have good friends, good food and the opportunity to combine the two.

Mini Mission Monday ~ Mixing it up a little

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

There is no real theme to this weeks declutter missions just a few suggestions on areas that might need a little consideration. I hope they spur you on to some great decluttering successes this week. Remember every little thing is one step closer to a decluttered home.

Monday – Whether you live in the Northern Hemisphere or the South and new season will soon be upon us. Now would be a good time to turn those coat hangers around that hold the next seasons clothing in your closet. Then as the season progresses you will be able to see which clothes you use and which ones you don’t. It will make decluttering the unused items and easy task at the end on the season.

Tuesday – In honour of Cindy’s Weekly Wisdom last week, today would be a good day to do a little use it up decluttering in your pantry. Plan on eating something out of there that has been sitting around for a while.

Wednesday – And in honour of Cindy’s Weekly Wisdom for this week why not start using up one of those second favourite items that have been set aside for a while because you like something better. Use it up and get it our of the way.

Thursday – Why not do a little digital decluttering today. Clear your inbox, eliminate unused numbers from you cell phone, do a little photo culling in your computer files or tidy up and eliminate out dated document.

Friday – The end of the working week. Take a little time today to declutter something from your work station. Whether that is at your paid job or at home is entirely up to you. Working is much more efficient in an uncluttered environment.

Saturday – The weekend is here and the family are together. Today would be a good day to get a little assistance with decluttering. Ask someone else in your household if they have something to add to your declutter pile. Sometimes they need a little coaxing to join in the mission. They may find the freedom of reclaiming some space addictive, fingers crossed! 😉

Sunday – A day to relax and contemplate what you would like to declutter next week. Take some quiet time today to think about one area of your home that you know needs dealing with. Simplify the situation in your mind so you can make a start without it seeming overwhelming.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Today’s Declutter Item

This is another piece of aspiration clutter that I have decided is excess to my needs. If I haven’t deconstructed it and used the beads before now I probably never will. One more item to go to the thrift store.

Something I Am Grateful For Today

Finally I am getting ahead of myself with blog posts. It is Mondays and the rest of the week, except Friday, is already in place. This is harder than you would think to accomplish so I am grateful that the ideas have been flowing lately. Maybe I will have less spelling and grammar mistakes but I am not expecting miracles. 😉

Mini Mission Monday ~ Aspiration Clutter

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week for our mini missions we are going to do a little aspiration decluttering. You know the things I am talking about. Those items you aspire to using one day but that day never comes. Why not be realistic and ease the pressure on yourself. Maybe by eliminating seven of those items it will free your mind to actually rekindle an old interest or take up something new you really will enjoy.

Choose something to eliminate each day from my suggestions below or come up with your own ideas.

Monday – A craft or hobby supply item.

Tuesday – A project that you started long ago but have never completed.

Wednesday – A gadget you bought to perform a function that rarely or never gets used.

Thursday – An item of clothing that you promise yourself is going to fit you again some day.

Friday – A piece of sporting equipment that, if you are really honest with yourself, you are not likely to use again.

Saturday – A recipe book that you haven’t made anything out of in years.

Sunday – Perhaps you have some pet supplies in the garage or shed that you no longer have the pets for. You keep telling yourself you will get another pet one day but in reality you like the freedom of not having to take care of them and of being able to up and go whenever you like and not have to find a carer while you are away.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Today’s Declutter Item

My declutter item of the day and the What am I quiz answer from Saturday is a three inch tall figure of Blossom from the Powerpuff Girls animated television series. She was given to me by some friends I worked with in the USA because she has the same hair as me. Or maybe they thought, like her, I was capable of amazing feats. Sounds right either way. 😆 She has been standing on a storage system in my craft room for years but I rarely look at her. I do however often think of my old friends so clearly I don’t need her to remind me of them. Out you go little redheaded wonder child.

Powerpuff Girl (Blossom) Toy Figure

Something I Am Grateful For Today

Blossom reminds me of how grateful I am that no matter where I have gone in my life I have always made wonderful friends. Friends that I will remember forever. Each place I have lived there has been at least two very special people that have graced my life. Although we usually lose touch over time if we ever run across each other again it is like we have never been appart. I am very fortunate!

Mini Mission Monday ~ Clutter Categories

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week I have decided to have the mini missions revolve around the Disassociation Series that I have published over the last couple of weeks. Each day I will choose one of the clutter categories and it is your mission to choose an item from the category to part with. Your choice can be as easy or as difficult as you choose but I suggest being brave and eliminate an object that has been a millstone around you neck that you will be glad to see the back of.

Monday – Re-read this post – Disassociation Part 1 ~ Guilt Clutter. Now choose an item in your home that falls into this category and move it to your discard pile, list it on eBay, freecycle it or get it out of the house as quickly by whatever means possible before you change your mind.

Tuesday - Re-read this post - Disassociation Part 2 ~ Obligation Clutter. Now choose an item in your home that falls into this category and move it to your discard pile, list it on eBay, freecycle it or get it out of the house as quickly by whatever means possible before you change your mind.

Wednesday - Re-read this post - Disassociation Part 3 ~ Aspirational Clutter. Now choose an item in your home that falls into this category and move it to your discard pile, list it on eBay, freecycle it or get it out of the house as quickly by whatever means possible before you change your mind.

Thursday - Re-read this post - Disassociation Part 4 ~ Security Clutter. Now choose an item in your home that falls into this category and move it to your discard pile, list it on eBay, freecycle it or get it out of the house as quickly by whatever means possible before you change your mind.

Friday - Re-read this post - Disassociation Part 5 ~ Sentimental Clutter. Now choose and item in your home that falls into this category and move it to your discard pile, list it on eBay, freecycle it or get it out of the house as quickly by whatever means possible before you change your mind.

Saturday – I have given you enough emotional stuff to deal with for one week so today you can take it easy. Just declutter one item of you choice.

Sunday – You have earned your day of rest today so sit back and enjoy it. I hope you managed to part with something from each category or at least one thing a day. Today you can reflect on your accomplishment and be rested for the new week to come.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Today’s Declutter Item

I got an unexpected phone call today from a young man who had seen our sale ad for the futon below. He needed something in a hurry because he was tired of sitting on the floor. He arrived soon after, gave me $50, tied the futon to the roof of his care and went happily on his way.

The futon was my sons bed for several years but really wasn’t suitable any more. Actually I am not sure it ever was but he chose it. I normally wouldn’t include an item that has been replaced but it is a good example of maintenance decluttering so I decided to let this one through as an item of the day. One in one out, no trying to incorporate it into the house somewhere else.

Something I Am Grateful For Today

The space that was liberated in my garage today. The new bed has been in place for a couple of months now and the futon has been cluttering up my garage. So I am very happy to see the back of it.
