Monday Mini Missions ~ Tasks we sometimes avoid

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

There are always those declutter items that are a little trickier to move along than others. Sometimes we might need someone else’s cooperation for this, sometimes we aren’t sure how to declutter items responsibly, while other times we are just avoiding the selling process, and the reasons go on. This week we will work on dealing with some of these avoided tasks. Perhaps there will be a task or two that won’t be so mini but just appreciate the nudge to do something about them. I am sure you will feel better for finally acting upon your desire to rid yourself of these items.

Monday – Put something into use this week that you don’t utilise much. If you don’t find the item all that appealing maybe it’s time to declutter it. This could be anything from an item of clothing to a kitchen item.

Tuesday - Declutter something you have been considering for removal for some time.

Wednesday – Take action on something that you want to declutter but aren’t sure how best to rehouse it. Maybe it’s time you investigated this situation.

Thursday – Gather up a group of similar items, decide which ones you really do need and declutter the excess. Kitchen items are usually a good target for this type of decluttering.

Friday – Do a small section of a larger decluttering task that you’d rather avoid~ like my photo decluttering task. If you attack this task in small doses it will be eventually be completed without being such a drag.

Saturday – If you have offered something to a friend but they haven’t dropped by to pick it up, take it to them yourself. Better to just have it out of there.

Sunday - Ask another household member if you can declutter something that belongs to them. You may have no luck but I guarantee you won’t know the answer if you don’t ask the question.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Mini Mission Monday ~ Function

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

Every piece of clutter we own has a function or at least used to before we stopped using them. This week’s mini missions are centred around the intended use of an object. I’ll name the function and you can use your imagination to choose something to declutter that suits that category. Have fun and happy decluttering.

Monday – Declutter something intended for entertainment.

Tuesday - Declutter something used for food preparation.

Wednesday - Declutter something used as an adornment.

Thursday - Declutter something intended for pampering.

Friday - Declutter something used for cleaning.

Saturday - Declutter something used for nourishing.

Sunday - Declutter something used as a covering.

I had kept these trains in the top of my son’s closet because they were one of his favourite toys when he was little. He asked me a little while back, “Why haven’t you gotten rid of those Thomas toys yet? I don’t want them.” That was all it took to convince me to let them go. He was glad to have the money from their sale.

Mini Mission Monday ~ What is clutter made of?…

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

…Well that is an easy question ~ everything imaginable that is what clutter is made of. So this week I had a little fun putting together seven mini missions based on the substance of what clutter is composed. Have fun with them. I am looking forward to hearing about what you come up with.

Monday – Declutter something made from plastic.

Tuesday - Declutter something made from wood.

Wednesday - Declutter something made from paper.

Thursday - Declutter something made from fibre.

Friday - Declutter something made from glass

Saturday - Declutter something made from metal.

Sunday - Declutter something made from leather.

Mini Mission Monday~ Real Simple

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

I have to admit that sometime my mini mission sound simple in theory but aren’t so simple to carry out. No 10 minutes simple anyhow. So this week I am going to make it really simple by name seven categories from which I only want you to declutter one thing. Should you choose to step it up a notch and declutter a few more then good for you.

Monday – Declutter one garden item ~ be that a sick plant, a garden gnome, a broken pot…

Tuesday –  Declutter one rarely used tool or gadget in you home.

Wednesday – Declutter one dust collecting ornament.

Thursday – Declutter one vessel that can contain fluid ~ drinking glass, fish tank, bottle, jar…

Friday – Declutter a pair of shoes you rarely use.

Saturday – Declutter a electric cable that serves no purpose.

Sunday – Declutter something made of paper.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Mini Mission Monday ~ 10 Sep 2012

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

I have been doing a bit of visiting lately and during that time I have been observing areas of clutter that seem to be familiar to nearly all homes no matter what level of stuff or tidiness therein. So this weeks mini missions will reflect those observation and consist of common clutter. I hope that many of you will find that you have already taken care of these areas as I have included them all often in past mini missions. If that is the case invent your own mini missions for the week.

Monday – Clothing items, be that shoes, general clothing, outer clothing, underwear or accessories. I know this subject gets mentioned over and over again but that is because it is an area the needs addressing by most people. Taking a look back at Mohamed Tohami’s recent guest post it would seem that most of those who comment here regularly have this area well under control.

Tuesday – Declutter something that has been relegated to the garage because it has been replaced with a better model or has broken down altogether.

Wednesday – Choose and begin to use up an item that you have more than enough varieties of. This could be something in your pantry, your bathroom cabinet, your store of cleaning products…

Thursday – Tools or equipment you rarely if ever use. Consider that you could borrow these items when you are in need from those who do actually use theirs. In some cases these items are so expensive that it would be cheaper to pay someone to do the job for you when the rare occasion arrises rather than maintain ownership.

Friday- Declutter excess kitchen items. This is one area of the home where people seem to think ~ “The more the merrier!”. For me it is the more the messier.

Saturday – Leisure activity items, be that sport, craft, digital media, reading material etc. There are nearly always items among these collections that are less utilised than others or in some cases not at all. To narrow down the selection makes the things you do use easier to find when needed. Superseded equipment is a good place to start the weeding out process.

Sunday – Declutter your excess linen. I fact rethink how much linen you really require to cater for yourself your family and a couple of guests. Some people seem to stock enough for the All Blacks (New Zealand) rugby team. This really isn’t necessary especially if you have a dryer and even if you don’t a laundromat is never far away should you have a houseful of people and the weather turns foul.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Mini Mission Monday ~ (From the archives) Clutter Categories

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

I love to throw in a good old clutter category set of  missions every now an again to get you thinking about what sort of clutter you have. So this week we will declutter something from each of the clutter categories I refer to on a regular basis and one or two less used categories I have referred to in the past. Declutter at least one item per category.

Monday – A Sentimental item. This is self explanatory really it is an item you feel personally attached to or at least once did.

Tuesday – A Guilt item. Something you feel guilty about acquiring in the first place.

Wednesday – An Aspirational item. Something you aspire to getting around to using or trying one day but you know one day is unlikely to come.

Thursday – An Obligation item ~ Something you only keep because you feel you should. Often something someone else gave you.

Friday – A Lazy clutter item ~ No attachment you just haven’t got around to getting rid of it.

Saturday – An Natural Progression item ~ Something that no longer fits, physically or intelectually or has simply been used up or worn out.

Sunday – A Location Inappropriate item ~ That is something the no longer suits your lifestyle since a location change. Perhaps snow gear if you have moved to warmer climes.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Mini Mission Monday ~ From the Archives ~ The Seven Re’s

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week for our mini missions we are going to re every day. Yes I did mean re and you will understand what I mean when you read the missions below. If you can’t think of a task to suit each day just repeat Monday over and over. Good luck

MondayRelinquish something. Anything will do. Send it to a new home just get it our of yours.

TuesdayRecycle something. Perhaps some old greeting cards like I did last week, maybe some magazines or even plastic containers you thought might find useful one day.

WednesdayRefurbish something. Maybe something has become clutter because it needs a lick of paint to bring it back to life.  Even if you end up not using it after all at least if it will now be in better condition for whoever finds it at the thrift store or if you decide to sell it.

ThursdayRepurpose something. Yesterday I constructed a dolly (a small platform with wheels) out of a piece of chipboard and some spare casters in the garage. It is now making the compressor easier to move around. Maybe you have something in your home that would be good to use for a purpose it may not have been intended for.

FridayReinstate something. This might be a bottle of shampoo that has been relegated to second best. Bring it to the fore and use it up because it is always going to be second best and wasting space. Or perhaps an old pair of shoes you love but never use. If you find that even after reinstating them they are not used then perhaps it is time to let them go.

SaturdayRegift something. We all have received gifts in our lives that we never really had a need or want for. Why not pass one of them on to someone else who might get the enjoyment out of it that you never did. It doesn’t have to be an occasion just pass it on for the fun of it. Make sure the recipient knows there are no strings attached.

SundayRefuse ~ Interpret this one to suit yourself. If you go shopping today refuse a plastic bag, take your own carry bag instead. If you are offered a free sample of something that isn’t instantly consumable politely refuse it. Refuse to buy yourself that thing you think you need and give yourself time to think more responsibly about the transaction.

Good luck and happy decluttering

These little pie tins came from my grandparents bakery shop from back in the 1930’s. I rarely if ever use them so I have relinquished them to someone who will. I took them to the thrift store and they were sold before I finished my shift.

Mini Mission Monday ~ Revisiting Areas

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

There are certain areas in my home that I revisit to declutter over and over again as I get more ruthless and am willing to part with more things. Some of these areas require periodic decluttering because they house perishable items that end up past their used by dates and need decluttering. So this week’s mini missions are going to consist of decluttering areas in your homes that match areas I keep revisiting in mine.

Monday – Declutter something from the kitchen ~ One day I will finally get to the point where there is nothing left to declutter from my kitchen but for now I keep plugging away at it.

Tuesday – Declutter out of date items from your first aid kit ~ Replace the item if necessary but I find that things that go out of date in my kit are things that never get used so perhaps they just don’t need replacing.

Wednesday – Declutter something from the bookcase again ~ I don’t just keep books in my bookcase so I have several item choices in this area. If that isn’t the case for you I am sure there is one of two books that could be culled.

Thursday – Declutter something from your garage, basement or attic ~ These areas are often holding places for all sorts of things some useful and used some forgotten and unnecessary. Time to clear out a few of those unnecessary items.

Friday – Declutter your socks and underwear drawers ~ I don’t know about you but I tend to wear, wash and put these items back over and over and then when things start to wear out I avoid them and then they just languish in the drawer for months. So every now and again I do a little declutter. Some items I might replace but only if I don’t already have too many.

Saturday – Declutter, from your closet, this season’s clothes that haven’t been worn ~ It’s almost August so if you haven’t used clothing items for this season by now you probably never will.

Sunday – Declutter your craft/hobby area whether your choice of pastime is anything from woodwork to papercraft, sewing, knitting, gardening or even some kind of sport. ~ Even though I have done the bulk of my decluttering in my craft area it is still under constant review.

Good luck and happy decluttering

This baking dish has rarely been used in twenty five years. It has survived the cut until now for two reasons 1. because it was a wedding gift (lame reason) and 2. because it was hiding in an obscure spot in the bottom of a kitchen cupboard (the more likely reason). It was unearthed during my attempts to update our inventory. There is nothing like having to write a full inventory of what is in your home to encourage you to declutter stuff. The less there is the less you have to list.

Mini Mission Monday ~ One from the archives ~ Once Loved Clutter

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This week we are going to declutter things we thought we loved. Well let’s face it all clutter could fall into that category. In this case though I am talking about things we acquired because we thought they were great or kept for sentimental reasons but have since become emotionally detached from.

Monday – There is usually at least one make-up item among the others that we once thought suited our pearticular kind of beauty but now wonder where we got that idea. If you have such an item but haven’t had the sense to throw it away yet, today is the day.

Tuesday – How many handbags do you have and how many of them do you actually use. Declutter one that that you haven’t used in a long time because you don’t love it like you once did.

Wednesday – Declutter one of those once favourite outfits that you never wear any more. Chances are it is now way out of fashion.

Thursday – Check your keepsake box for something you kept but now wonder why. Declutter anything that you feel this way about.

Friday - What is on your walls? Is there something hanging there simply out of habit that you don’t really want or even particularly like? Now is the time to declutter it.

Saturday - Have a look in your display cabinet there is bound to be something lingering in there that you long ago lost interest in. Time to send it to the thrift shop.

Sunday- Look in your jewellery box – Are you really going to wear all of those earrings again or that ring your old boyfriend gave you? Time to cull a few things in there don’t you think?style=”text-align: center;”>Good luck and happy decluttering

Mini Mission Monday ~ Follow my lead

Mini Mission Monday is about finding ten minutes a day to declutter. To make it easy for you, each Monday I set seven declutter missions, one for each day of the week for you to follow. It takes the guess work out of decluttering and makes it easy and “fun” for you to achieve some quick decluttering.

This weeks mini missions reflect the decluttering missions I was working on last week. I was a bit all over the house so they will be varied if nothing else. As usual if you don’t have anything similar to declutter then make up your own substitute mini missions.

Monday – Advertise something for sale ~ I use ebay mostly but I also offer things to friends and post  For Sale  ads to a Facebook group I am involved in.

Tuesday – Take a load of items you have decluttered to the thrift store. I do this once a week when I go to my thrift store to do my volunteer shift. I haven’t been able to drive there for the last four weeks so there was a bit of a backlog.

Wednesday – Declutter something you have been undecided about for a while. I sometimes put items aside that I am procrastinating about but after a while I get tired of seeing them in the “maybe” pile and just bite the bullet and get rid of them. These are often the kinds of things I sell on ebay. Selling them makes me feel better about my decision.

Thursday – Declutter something you have an alternate for. I am finally getting rid of that artificial ivy I have mentioned here before. I own a glass fish bowl that I now fill with pruned greenery from the garden. With Spring on the way there will be no shortage of options to display in it. Thank you to whichever 365er gave me this idea.

Friday – Declutter storage containers that you no longer need due to your decluttering efforts. These are another thing that I move to the garage when emptied. Once I am sure that I don’t have a use for them I make the final decision to declutter them permanently. The more useful or versatile the container the longer it takes for me to come to this decision.

Saturday – Declutter excess gift wrapping supplies. Last week I took the bulk of what I had left ~ gift bags, ribbons and bows ~  to the thrift store. As I have adhered almost religiously to my “no material gifts” pledge I decided it was time to purge these “just in case” items. The bag of bows was sold before I finished my shift.

Sunday – Declutter excess serving bowls. I probably have too many nice serving bowls but one thing is for sure, I don’t need to keep the cheap plastic one. It tends to be the everyday use option while the good ones are saved for when I have guests but you know my opinion on that tactic so out it goes.

Good luck and happy decluttering

Today’s Declutter Item

Here are some items I listed and sold on ebay last week. I had got very little use out of them but there is aways the temptation to keep them “just in case”. Instead I removed the temptation and turned “just in case” into cash in my paypal account and that is something I will use for sure.
